Resource Directory for the Neighborhood Action Plan

This Resource Guide includes a directory of people and organizations to help you make positive change in your neighborhood. This Directory is organized by the seven priority areas from the Neighborhood Action Plan. Contacts within each priority area are organized based on different interests, projects, or issues that fit into that topic. *Note that contacts may change – please contact VIA at info@viacdc.org for updated information.

Together, we can make sure everyone in our community has what they need.

Food Resources

Anyone 60 years or older is eligible for FREE meals provided by Milwaukee County Dine Out program. Hot meals “to go” are available Wednesday and Thursday in the School Sisters of St. Francis parking area on 29th and Lapham.

Wednesday breakfast is provided by Orenda Cafe between 9:00am – 10:00am. Call 414-391-9009 to reserve your meal by 9:00am on Tuesday.

Thursday lunch is provided by Vientiane Noodle Shop from 11:30am – 12:30pm. Call 414-391-9009 to reserve your meal by 11:00am Wednesday.

A family member or friend can also pick up the meal if you can’t. Be sure you reserve your meal 24 hours beforehand. For pickup, enter the parking lot on the east side of the street between Lapham and Greenfield, then follow the driveway to the Maria Linden building. There, staff following COVID-19 safety practices, will place meals in your car. Walk-ups are also welcome.

Ayuda Mutua MKE

Ayuda Mutua MKE Provides food and supplies Tuesday-Thursday, from 4-7pm at St. Patrick’s Church School, 1115 S 7th St. They also offer home delivery**, complete this form.

**Delivery can take up to a week due to high demand.

Ascension Lutheran Church

Ascension Lutheran Church operates an emergency food pantry on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month. Signup starts at 9am, food is distributed starting at 12 Noon; first come first serve. Pantry is located in the Common Area of the church, 1236 S Layton Blvd.

Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS)

Milwaukee Public Schools provide free meals to students, Monday-Friday, 11:00am-1:00pm. The closest location to our neighborhoods is ALBA School on 1712 S 32nd St. See all locations here. (Spanish Link)

Boys & Girls Club

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee’s meal continuation plan will ensure children 18 years of age or younger receive three meals per day. Each Monday from 11am-3pm, they will be distributing 21 meals for each child 18 years old and under (3 meals/day for 7 days). Please arrive prepared to carry and transport a large amount of food, as well as educational materials. The nearest location to our neighborhood is the Davis at 1975 S. 24th St. See all locations here.

Despensa de la Paz Food Pantry

Despensa de la Paz Food Pantry, 1615 S 22nd St, Saturdays 10am-12pm.

2-1-1

Use the 2-1-1 Wisconsin website or call them at 2-1-1 to find more food pantries.

Milwaukee Recreation

Milwaukee Recreation will be serving meals at the Burnham Park Parking lot, 1755 S 32nd St, beginning June 22nd (for kids ages 6-17).  At this point in time, and in the interest of keeping their staff and customers safe, sites will be meals only, there will be no structured play opportunities.

National School Lunch Program - temporary Food Benefits

Families with a child or children who usually get free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program can get temporary food benefits. For more information, click here.

Health Resources

See a list of Milwaukee’s free and income-based clinics, some of which can provide care with or without insurance. Contact the clinics directly with any questions.
Sixteenth Street is taking new patients for COVID-19 testing and care. Sixteenth Street is seeing and testing patients by appointment only.

If you don’t have a doctor and have any of the following symptoms, call Sixteenth Street right away at 414-672-1353:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Trouble breathing
  • Abdominal pain or diarrhea
  • Chills/shaking with chills
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • New loss of taste or smell

If you are given an appointment and told you need to be tested, Sixteenth Street will do your test at one of their drive-through testing sites, offered at the Chavez, Parkway, and Waukesha clinics. Services

  • Beginning Monday, March 16, Spectrum will offer free access to internet and WiFi for 60-days for new Pre-K to 12, college student and teacher households who don’t currently have internet or WiFi service and at any service level up to 100 Mbps. Learn more here or call (855) 243-8892.
  • PlayWorks – We’ll be highlighting a series of Playworks games on their social media channels. These will be games that can be played at home with a small number of children or larger groups in schools that are open. Learn more at their website or Facebook Page.
  • The Urban Ecology Center has launched their In My Backyard page full of fun videos, activities, and more for people of all ages to feel connected to nature throughout the Safer at Home order.
