The 3514 W. National Avenue building sat vacant for nearly a decade. In 2017, VIA purchased the building and played a key role in its transformation as part of the Silver City Catalytic Redevelopment Project, an initiative to increase economic vitality and improve National Avenue as a safe and enjoyable source for sustainable local job growth. VIA invested approximately $487,000 in the renovation of the 2,200-square-foot restaurant space, as well as the three-bedroom apartment located upstairs. VIA connected with Leticia Muñoz, a Latina entrepreneur with 15+ years of experience, through a Silver City neighbor. Leticia’s vision for Orenda Cafe—a diner-style restaurant that blends the South Side’s flavors with her Mexican roots—transformed a long-vacant building into a warm community hub. In late 2023, she purchased the property, moving from tenant to owner. This accomplishment reflects her dedication and serves as an inspiration to others in Silver City and Milwaukee, highlighting the power of perseverance and community-focused entrepreneurship.
